Worship
is not something you do as much as it is something you become. Your life can
become a “living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God…discerning the good,
pleasing, and perfect will of God.” Romans 12:2. This is something you first
desire, then learn, then become. David will teach you from God’s word.
The
second smooth truth to pick up from the story in 1 Samuel 17 is seen when David
is taken before King Saul in 17:31 – 37. Saul reminds David that he is just a
boy and that Goliath has been a warrior since he was a boy. This is one of the
hindrances of worship; focusing on the circumstances, limitations, and
conditions rather than upon the character of God! Saul was an
expert on seeing and knowing (yada) circumstances, limitations,
and conditions, which was why he was so fearful all the time. David knew (yada)
God and God’s word! Hallelujah!!!
The
second smooth truth to pick up is David’s reply to Saul. It is found in 17:34 –
37. David told Saul about what he would do when a lion or bear would come to
kill, steal, and destroy the sheep he was charged to keep. David said he went
after them, would attack them, and would kill them, all in the Name of the
LORD! It was worship for David to protect the sheep from lions and bears for he
saw himself as a servant of God and saw the sheep as God’s sheep, not his. He
knew his actions of protecting the sheep pleased God, and that God would do
what only God can do, if he would do what God wanted him to do, which was to keep
the sheep!
David’s
statement in 17:37 is the second smooth truth. “The LORD who delivered me from
the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand
of this Philistine and he will be like the (dead) lion and bear for he has
defied the armies of the living God.”
This
statement is a confession of faith and confidence in the truth of God and His
promises to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. The Promised Land had been given to the
patriarchs and their descendants. There was no room for Philistines in the
Promised Land. This was according to God’s word. David knew God’s word and
believed Him and so he could speak with authority and could act with the same
authority and confidence. He knew God and knew that the battle was the LORD’s
and that he was the weapon of God in that fight!
Knowing God through faith in Jesus Christ and
declaring God’s word in particular situations becomes a worship experience
because it pleases the Father when we know Him and trust Him in every
situation. Knowing His word concerning your life, His promises, His desire for
you, the power and authority in His Son, is a mighty weapon against the world,
the flesh, and the devil, which are like the lion, the bear, and the
Philistine. This is a powerful smooth truth for worshiping the Father in spirit
and truth.
Today,
focus your attention on knowing God, according to His word, on learning from
Him more and more of your new identity and new responsibility in the new life
you have in Christ. Confess the truth of who God is, what His promises are, who
you are in Him and Him in you!
Tomorrow,
the third smooth truth for becoming a true worshiper.
