They Lived and Had Children

Following the tragic lineage of Cain, the fourth chapter of Genesis closes with hope, “And Adam knew his wife again and she bore a son and called his name Seth, for she said, ‘God has appointed to me another offspring instead of Abel, for Cain killed him.’ To Seth also a son was born, and he called his name Enosh. At that time people began to call upon the name of the LORD.”

When Adam and Eve sinned in Genesis 3, God spoke the first word of hope and began to unfold the plan of redemption by cursing the serpent, “I will put enmity between you and the woman, between your offspring and hers; He shall bruise your head and you shall bruise his heel.” Genesis 3:15. No doubt Eve thought Abel was the promised offspring to destroy the curse of sin. The name “Seth” is from the root word sheeth, which means to appoint. Eve named her third son as an act of faith believing in God’s appointed Promise who would come and crush the head of the serpent. Satan has been after the Seed of woman ever since; to no avail.

Seth’s descendants began the new trend of calling upon the name of the LORD. This is a statement of worship and hope, confessing that God must do something; they were powerless against the power of sin. And they believed He would, based upon His promise. Chapter five describes their lives. As you read chapter five you notice that they lived, married, had a son, named the son, had other children and then died; that’s all. They went back to the original command to be fruitful and multiply and they obeyed it; but now with a new hope and purpose; to bring into the world the Promised Seed of woman to crush the serpent’s head.

The seventh from Adam, Enoch, would be the clearest picture of the one to come. It seems his life was cut short in terms of age as compared to the others. And yet, this was not his main feature. He walked with God and one day God took him. The Bible does not give us any of the details except that he walked with God and God took him. The writer of Hebrews does not tell you much more except that he walked by faith and pleased God and was never found; God just took him, Hebrews 11:5. God was so pleased with Enoch that he could not wait any longer to have him in His presence in heaven; so He took him. AMEN!

Walking with God is an expression of obedience. When you walk with God, you are following the direction of His word. When you walk with God, you have fellowship with Him; you enjoy His presence. When you walk with God, He empowers your steps as you trust the direction He leads. God is the power of His own commands, “He who calls you is faithful and He will do it.” 1 Thessalonians 5:24. Enoch’s life was a prophesy of the life of Jesus Christ, the virgin-born Promised Seed of woman; the one who crushed the serpent’s head and brought salvation to man! Hallelujah!!!
