The Foundation Of True Worship

Jesus fulfilled the Old Testament and established the New in Himself. The foundation of the New Covenant is the new relationship with the Father through faith in Christ. The foundational expression of that new relationship is true worship. In John 4:19-26, Jesus lays the foundation of the true worship.

Builders know that the foundation of a building is the most important part, for if the foundation is off, the whole building will be faulty regardless of how well it is built. Everything rests upon the foundation. Jesus ended the Sermon on the Mount with the story of two builders, one who built upon a true foundation and the other who built upon a false foundation. You remember the outcome (Matthew 7:24-27).

As in the parable, it is hearing and doing the words of Jesus that assures you of the true foundation for worship. Jesus said we must worship the Father. The word "must" is the same word He used in His conversation with Nicodemus in John 3:3 when He said, "You must be born from above." It is also the same word He spoke to His parents when they found in in the Temple with the teachers and Jesus said, "Did you not know that I must be about my Father's business?" Luke 2:41-51. And again at the beginning of John 4 the same word is used saying they must go through Samaria, 4:4.

Jesus teaches us that we must get this right, worshiping the Father. It is foundational. God created us to worship Him and through faith in Christ we have been recreated. The new creation has begun in you with new life in Christ! And the foundation of the new creation is true worship. It is the first activity of the new birth and it is the essence of the Father's business which is why Jesus had to go through Samaria! It is also something to learn from Christ, according to His Word.

Pray, "Lord Jesus, teach me to become a true worshiper of the Father and what it means to worship the Father in spirit and truth. I must learn this. Nothing else will be right until I understand this and do it. Here I am in Your class, Worship 101. Teach me, Lord, Your servant is listening."
